St Anne Feast UK: 3 Vibrant Celebrations by Goan Diaspora
The St Anne Feast UK brings together Goans from across the diaspora every July for a month of deep faith, nostalgic reunions, and vibrant community celebrations. Every year, as Goa celebrates Santannaschem Fest (Feast of St. Anne) and Grandparents’ Day, Goan families across the UK—particularly networks of Ponda parishioners—recreate the warmth, rhythm, and flavor of their native parishes far across the globe.
From London’s West End suburbs to Wiltshire’s bustling hub of Swindon, community gatherings this year highlighted how a shared heritage keeps Goans closely knit regardless of distance.
1. Hounslow & West London St Anne Feast: Faith, Family, and Honor for Grandparents
In Hounslow, West London, the Ponda Parishioners UK hosted their first signature annual gathering, bringing together elders and families from across Greater London.
- Sacred Beginnings: The feast began with a special blessing of the sacred St. Anne statue – a cherished figure brought all the way from Goa. Main organiser Ronald and the organising team presented the statue, which was solemnly blessed by Fr. Damian-Mary Moneke, CSSp, Parish Priest at SS Michael and Martin Catholic Church, Hounslow. The feast day celebrations began with a Holy Mass where prayers and homilies emphasized peace in homes, strong marriages, and guidance for young people.
- Honoring the Elders: In line with St. Anne’s legacy as the mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary and grandmother of Jesus, a special cake-cutting ceremony was held exclusively for grandparents present.
- Community Spirit: Supported by dedicated committee members including Ronald, Antonette, Kevin, Fiona, Dorina, Melroy, and Walter, , Mass Choir by Hounslow parish Sports and Cultural Society (led by Vincent), the evening featured lively Dine & Dance sessions with MC Steffi and DJ Johnson traditional party games, tongue-twister challenges, and raffle draws.
2. Swindon: Big Bands, Authentic Cuisine, and Future Growth
Further west in Swindon, where a significant Goan population resides, St. Anne’s Feast took on an extraordinary energy, organizing one of the largest regional social events for the community.
- Live Music & Brass Band Energy: Swindon’s celebration stood out with live performances by band Attitude alongside MC Alpha and MC Anley, bringing classic Goan bailas, Konkani pop, and brass rhythms that kept the dance floor packed all evening.
- Authentic Goan Feast: Prepared by Chef George and team, guests enjoyed authentic dishes including Pork Sorpotel, Chicken Cafreal, Mutton Sukka, Pilaf, and Sannas.
- Uniting Goans Across Towns: Attendees traveled from across the UK to attend—including families from Panjim, Margao, and non-Ponda roots—praising the hospitality and “home away from home” feeling created by the organizers.
3. Southall & Regional Gatherings: Keeping Culture Alive
Across Southall and neighboring UK towns, smaller parish networks and popular family vloggers like Fernandes Family in U.K. and K2N Family documented how Goans travel across counties to celebrate together.
Whether through exchanging home-cooked food, attending evening baila dances, or hosting games for children, these regional gatherings serve as vital cultural bridges for second-generation Goans growing up in Britain.
