📜 Guide: Applying for a Fresh OCI Card in the UK
An Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) card functions as a lifelong, multi-entry visa, granting foreign citizens of Indian origin the freedom to live, work, and travel in India indefinitely.
📋 Phase 1: Core Eligibility & Document Checklist
The High Commission of India categorizes OCI applications by eligibility path. Collect these mandatory documents before opening the online portal:
Route 1: Former Indian Citizens
- Indian Passport Surrender Certificate: The original certificate and cancelled passport booklet.
- British Passport: Your current valid British passport.
- British Naturalisation Certificate: The official certificate showing when you acquired foreign citizenship.
Route 2: Indian Descent (Up to 3rd Generation)
- Ancestral Proof: The original Indian passport, birth certificate, or domicile certificate belonging to your parents, grandparents, or great-grandparents.
- The Paper Trail: A seamless, legally valid chain of original birth certificates connecting you directly to that Indian ancestor.
📸 Strict OCI Photo Specifications:
- You must provide physical photos sized exactly 2 inches x 2 inches (51mm x 51mm).
- The photo must feature a pure white background with 80% face coverage.
- Note: You must have a matching square digital JPEG format under 500kb ready on your desktop to complete the online application.
💻 Phase 2: Step-by-Step Application Process
Step 1: Online Government Portal Registration
Navigate to the central Ministry of Home Affairs portal at ociservices.gov.in. Select Fresh OCI, choose your local UK jurisdiction (London, Birmingham, or Edinburgh), and complete Part A and Part B. You are required to digitally upload your photo, signature scan, and supporting documents directly onto the site before hitting submit. Print out the completed application.
Step 2: VFS Global Appointment Booking
The government form does not submit your application to the consulate. Head to VFS Global. Log in, input your application tracking number, and schedule a physical appointment at an active center. Print out your official VFS Appointment Letter.
Step 3: In-Person Submission
Attend your VFS slot with your printed application, two physical 2×2 inch photos, your original documents, and a complete set of self-attested black-and-white photocopies. VFS will verify your originals and take your digital biometrics.
💰 Fees & Expected Timelines
- Standard Government Fee: £215.00 + £2.00 Consular Surcharge + £7.44 VFS Service Fee. Total baseline price is roughly £224.44 (excluding secure return courier tracking fees).
- Standard Processing Timeline: Generally runs between 4 to 8 weeks from your VFS slot to physical delivery back to your address.
